I think you've gotten some great advice in general from the answers so far. You don't say much about why you would like to learn an instrument, though. Yes, to be frank, a 15-year-old beginning violinist could almost never make a professional career in classical music. For string players, starting by puberty at the latest, when your brain is having that crucial second neuron growth spurt in life, is almost always a necssity, with rare exceptions.

However, you are getting a lot of positive encouragement because most musicians play for the sheer joy of making music, and amateur musicians who may be only moderately skilled nevertheless often find more pleasure than some bitter or frustrated professionals who have the stress and pressure of trying to succeed or make a living. There are absolutely many beginners of all ages.

Private instruction for a complex instrument like the violin is key! Seek out the most reputable teacher in your community within your budget, and with whom you feel you have good chemistry after a trial lesson. The going rate varies greatly depending on your location, but a reasonable ballpark price could be up to $20 for a 30-minute weekly lesson. A regular commitment to practicing will also reap far greater rewards--similar to exercise, practicing a bit each day is much better for you than cramming right before a lesson. Best of luck!

It's up to you really, i have self taught myself playing drums, bass/electric guitar, piano, and also some violin too without lessons. It would be faster and better if you got lessons but if you are willing to be patience and learn yourself that can work too.

Hey!!

Honestly, to learn an instrument isn't easy in general but the main rule is:
You can learn it from whichever age you want, whether you are 3 or 93.. It will just get longer to learn the technique. I am from music college and we are always told that 21 is the age limit to start learning one, but I definately disagree with it. In any case, you are still very young and if you fancy learning an instrument do!! I recommend it!
Simply keep positive in everything you learn! :)

All the best!

15? you'll be a lucky one.
I'm 21 and I'm just started my violin lessons 2 years ago.
If you love it, so play it.
Actually, there's no such a -late age- on learning music instrument.
My friends start playing music when they're 15 too. it's ok to start it there, friend. :)

You can start any instrument at any time. I know someone who started violin lessons at around 72.

I'm teaching beginning violin to two students who play other instruments, and who read music well. One is 16, and the other one is 41, Both are doing well. It is never too late to start. You just have to work hard, and practice, practice, practice. If you have doubts about the whole idea, then you may not be able to do it. Build up your confidence, and go for it.

The only time that I can think music lesson would be a waste is when someone is forced into it and hate every second of lessons. Other than that learning music, regardless of the reason why, is one of the best parts of life. It can't be a waste of time to get lessons if it brings tons of joy and satisfaction to a person, that’s true in my life as I started violin at the age of 13 and still consider myself an older beginner. Lessons are especially vital at the beginning because they allow for an understanding of how the instrument works and how music theory works, allowing the student to continue to grow and learn regardless if they take lessons throughout their musical life. So music lessons are not a waste unless they are given to someone who has distain for them, other than that they allow for a student to learn a musical instrument with a lot less frustration and thus they will be more likely to be able to play music well for however long they wish!

Don't be pressured about music, let it be one of the therapeutic and joyful parts of your life! Start with lessons!

I definitely think you should take lessons.
I was 15 when I started taking lessons, and now I've improved so much. I'm trying out for college in the fall, and I'm going to be 18 this coming December. I'm getting my own gigs now (playing at weddings, etc.) which I get paid for.. I sight read easier.. I do soooo much more compared to back when I didn't have the lessons.
The point of a private tutor is to have one-on-one instruction with someone that specializes in your instrument to help you make the rough pieces easy.
Your instructor would know how to make the things easier for you if he/she is truly a good match for you.. You may have to look around to find someone that's right for you.. I'd start checking into people that are in maybe a local symphony orchestra or retired music teachers. :)
